Participatory Forest Management and Landscape Restoration

Participatory Forest Management and Landscape Restoration

Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and Nature Kenya (East African Natural History Society – EANHS), in partnership with other stakeholders, will be conducting a course on Participatory Forest Management and Landscape Restoration (PFM&LR). The course is designed for skills enhancement to improve practice-based approaches for PFM and LR implementers.

The course will provide a practical understanding of the processes to sustain PFM&LR, livelihood improvement programmes, and landscape restoration practices to support community and stakeholder actions and enable co- existence with nature for enhanced human well-being. The course provides an introduction to PFM&LR approaches and practices. The course will be implemented through Participatory Forest Management, Landscape Restoration and Practice of Partnerships Modules.

The module on PFM is guided by three development phases [primary, secondary and tertiary]. The LR module is developed from the broad definitions of LR as a way of reversing degradation processes and increasing the contribution of ecosystems and landscapes to livelihoods, land productivity, environmental services and resilience of natural systems. The Practice of Partnerships module will focus on stakeholder engagement and management. The course will be skill and practice-based to enhance participants’ understanding of the different benefits of PFM and LR. The participants will acquire skills in monitoring and evaluation of PFM and LR for sustainable management of landscapes, livelihoods and wealth creation.
