KEFRI’s Lake Victoria Basin Eco-Region Research Program staff participated in the Kisumu Regional Agricultural Society of Kenya Show at the Mamboleo A.S.K Show Ground, Kisumu from 24th to 28th July, 2019.
The team lead by the Regional Director Dr. Jared Amwatta was joined by staff from National Forest Products Center (Karura) and Corporate Affairs office from Headquarters.
KEFRI exhibited a Forestry Rehabilitation Model to disseminate information on seedlings of medicinal trees, timber and pole trees as well as ornamentals and seed harvesting gear.
The team also showcased Laboratory services including Soil laboratory processes and activities that are geared towards informing farmers about soil fertility recapitalization and management in the Lake Victoria Region.
Some of the products on display included; Aloe, improved domesticated indigenous fruits juices, bamboo products (mats, bookshelves, chairs, flower vases, tables, penholders, wooden trays and bowls). Some farmers opined that in future KEFRI should consider issuing free seedlings as a means of achieving 10% tree cover. There was a general demand for grafted mangoes and avocado seedlings as well as the technology (grafting techniques) from some of the show goers who visited the stand.
