KEFRI Dr. Joshua Cheboiwo hosted Mr. Katsuro Saito, the Chief Adviser in charge of Forest Extension under the Capacity Development Project for Sustainable Forest Management (CADEP-SFM) in Kenya on 8th December 2020.
Mr. Katsuro who was accompanied by CADEP Project Manager Mr. Peter Nduati held a strategic discussion with Director KEFRI and Deputy Director in Charge of Forest Biodiversity and Environment Management Dr. James Ndufa where they explored on research and development - strategies to acquire data curve on Melia volkensii and its market opportunities in the country was also attended and KEFRI’s.
“Communities and corporates are finding Melia volkensii a better tree species to grow in arid and semi-arid areas however there is reservations due to scanty information on seed/seedling available and markets for its products,” said Mr. Saito.
The Director stated that KEFRI scientists and the project counterparts implementing component 4 will collate available information to guide Melia development in the country.
The Director at the same time met with Mr. Tadashi Shimizu, a JICA expert joining CADEP project as an advisor on natural resources and climate change. The Director welcomed the team noting that KEFRI and JICA’s - 37 years of collaboration has enabled accomplishment of great research achievements more so in the dry-lands of Kenya.
The JICA delegate was led by Mr. Tomoyuki Yasuda the Senior Representative at Kenya office, and Mr. John Ngugi the Chief Regional Programme Manager on Environment and Climate Change.
