Presentation of Special seedlings for Kalimani Earth Dam in Kitui County

His Excellency Tatsushi Terada, Ambassador of Japan to Kenya led senior government officers and the community of Matinyani in planting Mellia volkensii (Mukau) around the Kalimani earth dam in Kitui County. The dam was rehabilitated by Initiative for Green Kenya, an NGO, with grant amounting to Kshs 9.1 Million from Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). JICA/ KEFRI Project which is raising drought tolerant tree species donated the special seedlings.
Present were Mrs. Martha Mulwa the CEO for the Initiative for Green Kenya, KEFRI Director Dr. Ben Chikamai, Kitui County Chief Officer of Environment Dr. Muusya Mwinzi.
The Ambassador expressed his appreciation to JICA and KEFRI for donating seedlings and assured community of the embassy’s full support in completing the project. “It is important for the Government of Japan to find ways to collaborate with the necessary institutions and people to enhance the activities that we are doing in Kenya,” said the Ambassador.
Dr. Chikamai praised the 3o year of collaboration between KEFRI and Japan government and called upon the community to plant grass, specifically bamboo, which is fast growing and good in stabilizing the soil.
